The Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is located about 20 minutes from downtown. It is served by major airlines offering direct service to Vancouver from many Canadian, United States and international points of departure. Several smaller airlines and charter services also utilize the Vancouver international Airport. Vancouver's downtown inner harbour is also served by floatplanes and helicopters. Between the airport and downtown, transfer service is readily available by shuttle bus ($10), limousine ($29), or taxi ($20-2s).
The Vancouver International Airport has been ranked number one in North America in the annual International Air Transport Association (IATA) global survey of international airports. IATA has conducted the annual Global Airport Monitor Survey of 57 international airports since 1993 to provide comparative performance indicators for major international airports. YVR ranked above average in all 18 airport service elements included in the survey. In terms of specific category ratings, YVR ranked 1st for comfortable waiting areas; 2nd for restaurants and eating areas; and 3rd for washroom facilities. Vancouver also achieved high ratings for airport ambience; courtesy/friendliness of airport staff; availability of baggage carts; and passport/visa inspection. The Vancouver International Airport Authority is a locally controlled, not-for-profit company which has developed and managed the airport since 1992, when it took over from the federal government. In 1999, YVR welcomed almost 16 million passengers and was rated as one of the top 10 airports in the world by IATA and Condé Nast Traveler magazine.
