Vancouver's first bookbinder Gustav Anton Roedde has two reasons to be proud. G.A. Roedde Bookbinder, Stationer and Printer survives today as B.C.'s eighth oldest business. And his modest 1893 West End home, attributed to family friend and renowned architect Francis Mawson Rattenbury, is Vancouver's first restored house-museum.Authentically decorated and furnished in Victoria-Edwardian style, right down to the wallpaper, this beautiful heritage structure is the cornerstone of Barclay Heritage Square - the Vancouver Park Boards unique collection of nine historic homes dating from 1890 - 1908. Each is located in their original setting with period landscaping and gardens, providing a visual respite amidst the surrounding high-rises which have made this neighborhood, known as Vancouver's West End, the most densely populated square mile in North America. You can rent Mr. Roedde's house, complete with 1893 Steinway, exuberant Queen Anne tower and porch, for your very own private party. Alternatively, you can enjoy tea (and a tour) most Sunday afternoons ..... a genteel break after a shop `til you drop extravaganza on Robson Street nearby.
